Personal philosophy of service statement:
Libraries are dedicated to serving all patrons with an educational viewpoint. The Library offers patrons of all ages a place for learning experiences to turn
these first experiences into lifelong patrons. Library staff members should create collections and services of children’s interests both in print and non-print
media and in acquiring these materials, they will organize and maintain them for easy and repeated access with a parent or guardian present at all times.
In doing so the library will bond and establish themselves as a patrons friend for life in providing knowledge to aid them through their learning experiences
and in their future endeavors. I would offer computer classes for adults and have instructors available to offer assistance to patrons and children in the proper
use and security of their personal information when entering such information on the Internet. Parents would be responsible in monitoring their child’s use of
the internet and informing the child about identity theft and the protection of their personal information.
The freedom to read is a right in our libraries. In following the ALA Bill of Rights I would continue to defend the efforts against censorship of materials that
would be deemed controversial or objectionable. Again I would say it would be the parent’s responsibility to monitor the materials available and instruct their
children as to what they can or cannot read while reassuring the patron there is a selection process in the choosing of materials at the library. I would advise
them of the procedures available should they wish to challenge that selection process.
Library information in any form is private in nature, and is protected to preserve the patron’s identity. The confidentiality of that information would also
extend to information sought or received as well as materials acquired. I would continue to make all patron information confidential subject only to its release
by a high level library administrator as required by a Superior Court of law. I would require that only information needed to conduct business with the patron such
as information for the issuance of a library card be the only information required.
In selecting library materials for children, I would maintain a policy to provide a collection of materials for children from birth through the eighth grade. The
materials that are included to meet the general needs of the majority of children, along with materials whose special qualities make them valuable to children with special needs, or interests. The responsibility for reading, viewing and using library materials and equipment by minors again would rest with the parents or legal guardians.
In being aware of the requirements of patrons in terms of finding sources I would provide patrons with an experienced librarian ready to offer a variety of
sources for their children’s needs. This would include knowledge of and placement of children’s books, DVD’s, audio books, eBooks, games, toys, and CDs.
I would also make available materials in an outreach collection for children with special interests and needs. This would also include providing the knowledge
and instruction of any assistive learning technologies. Further notice and instruction reference would be made with regard to children’s activities such as live shows,
shared parent and child discussion sessions, story times, and related activities.
For the protection and safety of all children I would require that a parent or guardian be present at all times for any activity a child may be a part of. Any unattended children should be immediately protected till the parent or guardian is found, contacted, or reconnected and in the presence of the child. Security should be alerted of any unattended child immediately.
Personal Reflection Statement:
This portfolio is a culmination of the goals, skills, courses, and training I have received over the past two years in realizing my goal of receiving a Bachelors Degree
in Information and Library Science. The time, effort, and commitment has been a rewarding experience and will have a major impact on my lifelong learning experiences of which I am grateful to have received.
The following exhibits and documentation will outline and provide proof of that progress and commitment in receiving my degree. I am grateful of having the opportunity and experience in working with my instructors in their dedication to providing me with the training and insights in helping me achieve my required competencies, goals, and degree. As a non traditional student having been blessed with the opportunity to return to school and walk again on the path I had sought to take many years ago. In walking our paths living life sometimes has an agenda of its own and while a diversion in our plans may interrupt our desired plans, knowing you can stray off that path to complete your assigned call of duty in life and return to it has been most important to me.
I have survived by trial and error and have learned what life can arrange and rearrange in the event of living it, however having resumed what I have sought in the form of education and professional development I am now retooled for the future path I so eagerly look forward to journey, for me as Shakespeare’s line in “The Tempest” says “What’s past is now prologue” and a new trail to blaze never caring to look back.
Statement of Relationship to Field of Library Science:
With the continued development of coursework and curriculum in education and in support of improving communication, research in the study of mathematics, science, social sciences, and the expansion of technology in the fine arts, business, computer science, and the humanities, the Field of Library Science serves as a strategic arm in that continued desire to expand our societies development. Our libraries collection of information is a critical and needed function in facilitating that expansion and growth from what has been gathered from the past, preserved now for the future, and encouraged in inventing and reshaping our processes for the future to come. As with the dedication of other fields in expanding those processes the Field of Library Sciences is there to serve, promote, and protect that effort and compliment that valued dedication.
